Paul Scholes: Anthony Martial can be one of the best players in the world

Paul Scholes believes Anthony Martial has what it takes to become one of the best players in the world at Manchester United.

The Frenchman finished his debut campaign in England as Old Trafford’s top goalscorer, but he’s endured a difficult start under Jose Mourinho this season.

He’s been in and out of the starting line-up as Mourinho looks to get the best out the Frenchman, pushing Martial to his limits as he hopes to cement his place in the first-team, as we saw with Henrikh Mkhitaryan earlier in the season.

Speaking about the situation, Scholes believes Mourinho has the right to pull players aside and judge if they’re doing well enough.

“It’s his right to do that, isn’t it? He sees them every day in training, he knows if they’re doing well enough day-in, day-out to be in his team on a Saturday,” he said.

“It was a puzzle about Mkhitaryan, we just didn’t know what was happening with the player we’d seen for so long but there was obviously something that wasn’t quite right in his performance when he did play, or in his training performances. But now he looks like a totally different player.

“Martial I think he’s done similar things with. I think he’s left him out for long spells, he brought him in against Watford and he did really well. He’s a young player as well, people forget how young he is. He’s going to make mistakes a lot but I think it’s clear to see the potential he has. He could be one of the real top players in the world.”

While Mkhitaryan has been ruled out of the EFL Cup final with Southampton at Wembley, Martial will hope to be included as he looks to prove his worth on the main stage.
