Rio Ferdinand thrilled with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s incredible performance against Southampton

Rio Ferdinand has expressed his delight following Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s match-winning performance during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Southampton in the League Cup final.

The Swede guided home an inch-perfect free-kick after 19 minutes before Jesse Lingard doubled Man United’s lead, only for Southampton to then restore parity with two goals from Marco Gabbiadini either side of half time.

But Zlatan, not for the first time this season, salvaged victory for Jose Mourinho’s men with a dramatic late header.

Ferdinand took to social media to heap praise on the 35-year-old for once again guiding his side to victory in emphatic fashion.

Football is indeed a team game, something only enjoyed when shared, and Southampton – as a collective unit – deserved to enjoy the euphoria of a cup final win.

But cup finals are different. Sometimes tactics, prior form and any external factors become irrelevant, leaving us – the global footballing audience – with a pure and very much in-the-moment battle. And such encounters, as demonstrated, favour the bold – those that remain composed amid the fury of a cup final harangue and deliver when their team needs them most.

That is exactly what Zlatan did against Southampton, and regardless of what happens in the following months he will be remembered as the hero of Mourinho’s first major triumph at Old Trafford.
