Gary Neville: Luke Shaw can be one of Manchester United’s best left-backs

Gary Neville believes Luke Shaw has the potential to go on and become one of the best left-backs in Manchester United’s history.

The Englishman arrived at Old Trafford in 2014 in a £27m deal and suffered a broken leg last season, resulting in a difficult start under Jose Mourinho this campaign.

He’s made just 14 appearances this term, with growing speculation over his future at the club, but Mourinho confirmed he would not be sold as Shaw just needs to work hard for his place in the team.

Speaking about his potential, Neville claims Shaw has to go for it and fight for his place.

“I think so, it’s too far to say he’s running out of chances, but it was always going to take him time settling into a new environment and injuries have been a problem,” he said.

“He has the potential to be one of the best left-backs Manchester United have produced.

“It gets to a point where enough is enough – he has to go for it.”

Mourinho recalled Shaw to the starting line-up against Bournemouth and the 21-year-old has proven he has what it takes to cement his place in the side under the Portuguese boss.

Shaw is by far United’s best left-back but he just needs to put his head down, work hard and continue to put in showings like we saw against Eddie Howe’s men.
