Former England international Alan Shearer admits he’d be surprised if Wayne Rooeny stayed at Manchester United next season.
Despite being the all-time leading goalscorer for club and country, and captaining both sides, his future at Old Trafford continues to be in doubt.
He’s no longer an automatic starter for either and has often been left on the bench, resulting in massive links with a move to China, Everton or another top tier club.
Speaking about the situation, Shearer has urged Rooney to consider his options.
“He has another 16 months left at Man United, plus the option of another year, so he could stay at Old Trafford and it might not be easy to force him out if at all they want to do that,” he said.
“It also depends on whether he wants to stay or leave. Without doubt he will have offers, but I’d be surprised if he was at Manchester United next season.”
He believes it may be more difficult for United to move Rooney on than many people think, as he recently put out a statement committing his future to Jose Mourinho.
Rooney deserves to be playing first-team football, but with others on the team proving they have more to offer, he’ll have to fight for his place in the side.
