Jose Mourinho insists he doesn’t know which Manchester United players to select against FC Rostov in the Europa League Round of 16.
The Portuguese boss had his squad in mind, but claimed after seeing the condition of the pitch at Olimp-2, has to re-consider his selection from the travelling squad.
It came as a surprise when Henrikh Mkhitaryan was included, with Mourinho stating he’d be back for the Chelsea clash and he could have even started but Mourinho has claimed he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to play the Armenian on the field.
“I didn’t have any contact with anyone until now,” he said.
“I just had a quick contact with one gentleman from UEFA, when I was looking at the pitch. And when I told him about my concerns, the gentleman told me the players are insured; if something happens, no problem.
“It is hard for me to believe that we are going to play on that field, if you can call it a field.
“And I don’t know what team to play, really. I don’t know if Henrikh Mkhitaryan is going to play. I don’t know.
“I have now a lot to think because I was expecting something more playable.
“In a very similar pitch in the summer in China we decided not to play but it looks like we have to play.”
The derby against Manchester City in the pre-season was cancelled because the pitch was too dangerous for players and Mourinho claimed the pitch in Russia was similar to the one in Beijing.
He’s already confirmed Zlatan Ibrahimovic will feature against Rostov and by bringing Daley Blind to his player interview, has indicated the Dutchman will also start.
