FC Rostov 1-1 Manchester United: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

Sergio Romero 6 – Could have possibly done more for Rostov’s equaliser. Had little else to do aside from gather a few loose shots.

Ashley Young 7 – Displayed plenty of energy and verve going forward on the right hand side. Handled his defensive duties with real composure.

Phil Jones 6 – A no-nonsense, safety-first type of performance from the Englishman. Could have been smoother on the ball.

Chris Smalling 6 – Lost track of Aleksandr Bukharov for Rostov’s goal, once again revealing a sense of positional frailty in his game this season. Looked relatively composed aside from that moment of misjudgement.

Marcos Rojo 7 – Produced a truly workman-like performance in difficult surroundings. Ensured that Rostov’s attacking frontier had little space to exploit.

Daley Blind 6 – Did well when it came to dealing with the basics but once again struggled to offer much impetus going forward. Luke Shaw would, one suspects, be a better fit at Stamford Bridge.

Ander Herrera 6 – Placed himself at the heart of a scrappy, disjointed midfield battle and largely dominated proceedings. Occasionally lacked discipline when making challenges.

Marouane Fellaini 5 – Did very little aside from providing a smart pass for Ibrahimovic in the lead-up to the opener. Made too many unnecessary fouls.

Paul Pogba 6 – Moved the ball around nicely, maintaining his usual composure in spite of the challenging surface, but couldn’t force the issue going forward.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 7 – Handed his side the lead in the first half and continued to inject skill and desire until being replaced by Anthony Martial.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6 – Produced a smart assist for Mkhitaryan’s goal but endured a fruitless evening in front of goal.
