Michael Owen believes Jose Mourinho made the right choice in playing Henrikh Mkhitaryan in Manchester United’s last-16 Europa League tie with FC Rostov.
The Portuguese boss was re-considering his decision to include the Armenian in the trip to Russia after seeing the condition of the pitch, claiming it was dangerous for his squad.
However, Mkhitaryan proved it was the right choice as he linked up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and found the opening goal of the game in the first-half at the Olimp-2 stadium.
Speaking about Mourinho’s choice, Owen claimed Mkhitaryan was ready to return.
“He’s got to play at some point, if he’s ready he’s ready,” he said.
“A bad pitch for hamstring is a heavy one. Or a really hard pitch that’s wet on top.
“I don’t think the pitch will affect him.”
He missed United’s last two fixtures, including the EFL Cup final against Southampton, after he picked up an injury against St Etienne in the last round of the competition just moments after scoring the only goal of the game.
Mkhitaryan returned with a point to prove and hopes are he can maintain his form as there’s no doubt he’ll be in the starting line-up to face Chelsea in the FA Cup Quarter-final.
