Ryan Giggs has called on Jose Mourinho to hand Marcus Rashford more opportunities at Manchester United over the next few weeks.
Rashford’s most recent start under Mourinho came in the last round of the FA Cup against Blackburn Rovers – a game in which he claimed his seventh goal of the season.
The youngster will lead the line for Man United’s FA Cup quarter final clash with Chelsea on Monday in the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who received a three game ban earlier this week.
And Giggs, speaking at Premier Futsal event in Delhi, told Goal that the youngster would benefit from more game time this season.
“He’s still a young player and second seasons can be really difficult,” he said.
“You’ve seen it with so many young players. I think he is still exciting and he can be a match winner still. He’s just been inconsistent. I like him and would pick him in my team. He will only get better.”
Starting opportunities under Jose Mourinho this season have been fiercely competitive, with the likes of Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Wayne Rooney and Rashford fighting over two or three positions, depending on what system the manager opts for.
And Rashford deserves praise for his sustained presence in the first team this season, producing some powerful performances on the wing and making important contributions from the bench ever since he was first used by Mourinho against Hull City back in August.
The next three games, however, present Rashford with a chance to make his biggest statement of the season so far.
