Manchester United fans not impressed with Paul Pogba’s performance against Chelsea

Manchester United fans have expressed their disappointment with Paul Pogba following his performance during their side’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter final.

The 23-year-old, deployed alongside Ander Herrera, enjoyed a commanding start at Stamford Bridge, only to then fade in creative influence once the Spaniard was sent off after 35 minutes.

Man United fans were quick to voice their disapproval of what was another muted display from the Frenchman.

Prior to the game it was thought that, with Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all set to miss out, this was the perfect time for Pogba to announce himself in a big game.

And there was a time – perhaps for the first 20 minutes – where it felt as if Pogba was getting into the groove: tackling hard, moving the ball around, always looking to move forward and find Henrikh Mkhitaryan – who was, judging by Mourinho’s game plan, supposed to be the medium through which Pogba could then bring the likes of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia further up the pitch with his forward thinking style, opening gaps for Rashford to exploit.

And then that red card happened: what followed, more or less, was Pogba having to sit deeper, looking for the occasional ball over the top, but mainly just maintaining that sense of midfield firmness usually supplied by Herrera.

In other words, this was never going to be an environment in which any midfielder could flourish. And next Thursday’s clash with Rostov would serve as a far better chance to see the Frenchman’s true qualities.
