Memphis Depay takes swipe at Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho

Memphis Depay has taken a swipe at Jose Mourinho’s decision to offload him to Lyon over the January transfer window, noting that he didn’t understand why he was omitted from the squad.

The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford back in the summer of 2015 following a sensational title-winning season at PSV Eindhoven but failed to impress on the left hand side all season.

He was then more or less completely frozen out by Mourinho, who didn’t hand the 22-year-old any Premier League starts prior to his January move to Lyon.

And Memphis, speaking earlier this week, was quick to question Mourinho’s decision to leave him on the periphery of proceedings at Man United.

“I didn’t understand [Mourinho]. But he’s the boss,” he said.

“I was just not good enough for him. That’s OK. I’ll show my quality here.”

Memphis had plenty of time to demonstrate his unquestionable worth to Mourinho but manifestly failed to do so. The likes of Marouane Fellaini, Phil Jones, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcos Rojo – all left out for an extended period of time this season – have demonstrated that, under Mourinho, they will receive opportunities if they continue to work hard in training.

But the Dutchman’s work rate and overall approach was clearly was below the standards expected by Mourinho, and he only has himself to blame for his forgettable 18 months at the Theatre of Dreams.
