Ander Herrera has given his thoughts on Manchester United target Antoine Griezmann, insisting that the Frenchman’s current form is tantamount with that of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
It was reported earlier in the season that Jose Mourinho had pin-pointed Griezmann, now with 22 goals this season, as his number one priority ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone recently confirmed that the 26-year-old could leave the Vicente Calderon over the summer.
And Herrera, who could go up against Griezmann when Spain face France on Tuesday, was quick to express his admiration for the striker.
“At his current level he can look Messi and Cristiano in the eye, but of course, these two have been doing it for seven or eight years,” he said.
Comparisons with Messi and Ronaldo are, like always, slightly on the ambitious side, but make no mistake: Griezmann is in devastating form this season. Even during what has been an underwhelming campaign for Atletico the Frenchman, fresh from his exploits at Euro 2016, has continued his exponential growth towards superstar brilliance.
The main thing one picks up when watching Griezmann is the sheer urgency with which he does everything: every run, tackle, header and shot feels somehow faster than anything else on the pitch. He is, to coin a grossly overused commentator’s phrase, a slippery customer, and supporters will be desperate to see him make his way to Manchester over the summer.
