Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone wanted by Aston Villa in £3m deal

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has expressed a desire to sign Sam Johnstone on a permanent basis over the summer after impressing on loan, according to reports.

Johnstone, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2009, was sent to Villa on loan back in January until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old, following a shaky start, has quickly acclimatised to life in the Championship and attracted praise from Bruce for what was his “best performance yet” for the Clarets during a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic, which saw the Englishman claim his fifth clean sheet in six games.

And according to the Telegraph‘s James Ducker and John Percy, Bruce is prepared to table an offer of £3m in exchange for Johnstone’s services on a permanent basis.

This is indeed the biggest seal of approval that Johnstone could possibly receive. Bruce clearly trusts the 24-year-old to feature as his No.1 during Villa’s pursuit of a place in the Premier League over the next year or so.

And United fans can hardly complain if the Englishman, who will never realistically pose a threat to David de Gea at Old Trafford, does indeed decide to remain in Birmingham at the end of the season.
