Raphael Varane has opened up about his special relationship with Jose Mourinho amid speculation of a summer move to Manchester United.
The 23-year-old was played under Mourinho for two seasons at Real Madrid and he was heavily linked with an Old Trafford move once the Portuguese boss took over in the summer.
However, that wasn’t the first time he came close to a Man United move as he was previously set to sign for the Old Trafford club before Mourinho stepped in to take him to the Bernabeu.
Speaking about his future at Real Madrid, Varane claims he’s clear of his place in the side under Zinedine Zidane this season.
“I had a special relationship with Mourinho. With Ancelotti, I played less but he did extraordinary things at Real Madrid and that is what counts,” he said.
“I wanted to know if the club was in line with my project, that I would play. The president and the coach told me they were going in my direction. I put my head down and I worked hard during the pre-season training.”
Speculation linking him with an Old Trafford move is only set to increase even though he’s happy at Madrid as Mourinho will be on the lookout for at least one defender to add to his squad in the summer transfer window.
