David de Gea no longer Real Madrid’s top summer transfer target – report

by Leo Nieboer

Real Madrid have placed emphasis on securing the services of Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois over David de Gea ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Spaniard was minutes away from completing a move to the Bernabeu in August 2015, only for the deal to break down during the dying seconds of the transfer window following documentation issues.

It has been reported in recent weeks, however, that Zinedine Zidane had reignited the club’s interest in the 26-year-old ahead of a summer bid.

But according to Goal‘s Kris Voakes, Madrid have turned their attention towards another former Atletico Madrid keeper in the form of Courtois.

This will be music to the ears of Manchester United fans. You could very easily picture any other position in Jose Mourinho’s side being somewhat improvable – that is, there are players that could perhaps better suit the Portuguese’s set-up at Old Trafford.

But De Gea is simply not one of them. The Spaniard’s lanky yet commanding figure between the sticks just feels inexplicably right, almost as if the keeper, over the years, has not just become a better player but indeed a better Man United player, and supporters will be desperate to see him remain at Old Trafford ahead of what promises to be an explosive 2017/18 campaign.
