Jose Mourinho reacts to Manchester United 0-0 West Brom

Jose Mourinho has given his thoughts following Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion, noting that his creative sector lacked consistency going forward.

Anthony Martial, Marouane Fellaini, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford all spurned chances to put the home side ahead on what was another ignominious afternoon at Old Trafford.

Man United now lie four points behind fourth placed Manchester City and will drop to sixth spot once again if Arsenal beat Pep Guardiola’s men on Sunday.

And Mourinho, speaking after the game, admitted that his side lacked the consistent attacking threat to break down a rigid West Brom side.

“I don’t criticise the other team. The other team came here to get a point, they came to defend and try win some times,” he said.

“They did that. I have nothing to say in relation to that. What I can say is we tried. We had six players absolutely phenomenal in their attitude, mentality and consistency: Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Young, Carrick and Fellaini.

“And then we have four creative players that we need to score a goal and they didn’t. They had flashes, moments, they didn’t have consistency and we dropped two points for that.”

Mourinho could have very easily recycled a transcript of past post-match interviews and used it today: the same sentiments were echoed following draws against Stoke City, Burnley, West Ham United, Hull and AFC Bournemouth. The clash with Tony Pulis’ side was exactly the same: 75% possession, 18 shots, no goals, and no advancement towards the top four.

United are simply not learning their lessons; supporters have, without doubt, witnessed progress this season, but this is an area that continues to hold their side back and could – and indeed looks growingly likely to – preclude them from reflecting any improvements made this year in where they finish in the Premier League table come May.
