Luke Shaw has been recalled to Manchester United’s squad to face Everton on Tuesday after talks with Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho heavily criticised the ambition, commitment and drive of Shaw when asked by a reporter in his post-match press conference after the 0-0 with West Brom which led to real questions over whether he had a future at Man United.
But The Daily Mail reports that Mourinho has immediately brought Shaw back into the squad after being impressed with Shaw’s decision to confront and discuss the issues with Mourinho straight away on Monday morning.
Over the course of the year Mourinho has publicly criticised Shaw on two separate occasions now – the first being after the loss away to Watford – but he’s also taken a softer approach on occasion as well, so he seems to be trying lots of different ways to get his message across to Shaw. Now, it looks like he’s provoked a reaction.
That is exactly what he brought out of Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, something fans hope is now repeated with Shaw. Could he have been treated somewhat differently after his horror injury last year? Absolutely, but Mourinho is a manager set in his ways and Shaw has had to deal with the full force of it.
What will change? Maybe nothing, maybe everything, but at least it sounds like Shaw has made a good impression by confronting Mourinho head on about the issue. Maybe this is the reaction Mourinho wanted, maybe we’re about to see the best of Shaw again. Here’s hoping.
