Atletico Madrid president Enrico Cerezo addresses Antoine Griezmann rumours

Atletico Madrid president Enrico Cerezo has dismissed rumours surrounding a potential move to Manchester United for Antoine Griezmann over the summer, noting that the Frenchman would not want to leave the Vicente Calderon this summer.

It was reported last month that Griezmann, supposedly Jose Mourinho’s main priority over the summer transfer window, was on the verge of completing a move to Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old quickly responded to such reports by issuing a statement that made it clear he was happy under manager Diego Simeone.

And Cerezo, speaking to Reuters, was quick to reiterate Griezmann’s sentiments with regards to his future.

“The best players will always end up playing where they want but now, fortunately, we have players who want to play at Atletico,” he said.

“We are doing well in the Champions League, we finish high in the league every season, we will have a magnificent stadium and we have a brilliant fan base who love all the players. We have everything a player could want.”

It has reached a point where Cerezo, instead of answering questions about Griezmann directly, uses such a enquiries as an excuse to aggrandise his own club. “He’s not leaving; we are incredible, why would he leave?” is the overarching message here.

He can indeed afford to say such things in the wake of Griezmann’s statement, in which he categorically ruled out a move away from the Vicente Calderon in the near future.

“I do not want to leave Atletico (whether for) Paris, China, USA, Russia or elsewhere,” he noted. “My future? I only care about the field, I feel good in Madrid, why should I change that?”

This can change, of course, but as things stand Mourinho will have to look elsewhere for a prolific striker over the transfer window.
