Now we’re in the middle of our busy April with nine games, Jose Mourinho is unfortunately having to contend with plenty of injuries for the game against Sunderland at the weekend.
Juan Mata is sidelined after groin surgery. His absence is a real blow but there is a quiet hope that he could return for Manchester United before the end of the season.
Chris Smalling has no fixed return date confirmed by Mourinho and has been missing since injuring himself away on international duty in training. The same goes for Phil Jones who was actually injured by Smalling during England training and in their absence Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo are fully expected to maintain their partnership in the middle.
Wayne Rooney is an odd one. Mourinho simply said he was unavailable for the Sunderland game, there was no mention of an injury. This season has seen Rooney slowly nudged towards the backdoor at United quietly, that looks to be continuing.
As for Paul Pogba, fans are hoping to see him back in action from the start having come off the bench at half-time against Everton. I’ll be honest in saying he looked slow and cumbersome in that game but after a few more days training, he could be back to full fitness. However, will Mourinho rest him for Anderlecht? It is certainly a possibility.
