Photos: Wayne Rooney back in training ahead of Anderlecht clash

Wayne Rooney has returned to training ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final clash with Anderlecht on Thursday night.

The 31-year-old’s last appearance came in the form of a 15-minute cameo during Man United’s 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League.

He has been sidelined since after picking up an ankle injury during a training session that followed the draw with Tony Pulis’ side.

But Mourinho has received a boost after seeing his captain return in time for the trip to Belgium.

It is unlikely that we will see Rooney feature against Anderlecht. The 31-year-old hasn’t made a start in Europe since early December and won’t, as is becoming the norm, be at the right physical standard to feature in a game that will see Rene Weiler’s side go straight for Man United’s jugular from minute one.

This is becoming something of a testimonial campaign for Rooney, who looks likely to depart over the summer after finally losing his status as the locus of this United side.

But Mourinho will hope that the 31-year-old remains fit over the next month as United embark on a series of important games that may call for the Englishman’s experience.
