Wayne Rooney has very much disappeared into the background at Manchester United since he became the club’s record goalscorer in January with a last minute equaliser against Stoke City.
Since then, he’s played only 131 minutes in the Premier League and with the end of the season fast approaching it very much looks like Rooney is going quietly out of the backdoor at Man United.
Lots has been speculated about Rooney and his future and the Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler writes that the 31-year-old has already told his United teammates he is off in the summer. For me, I would be so surprised if that didn’t happen.
Once upon a time in 2013, Jose Mourinho tried to poach Rooney from United. He failed, Rooney stayed but his career has been dwindling ever since. David Moyes and Louis van Gaal kept him central to their United plans, Mourinho has done the opposite and for me is the only manager since Fergie to manage Rooney correctly.
There is no doubting what a great player Rooney has been for United but he isn’t the player he once was. In every position, we have better players ahead of Rooney and he is no longer first choice. A series of niggling injuries have also kept him sidelined but if Marcus Rashford is being brought off the bench in a League Cup final ahead of Rooney, who was available, that is big an indicator that his time is coming to a close at Old Trafford.
When the season draws to a close and the summer window is upon us, we’ll no doubt get confirmation on Rooney’s stance and future but as I said before I would be very surprised if he does stay. If reports are indeed correct as well, Rooney has also started to inform his teammates he’ll be leaving as well.
