Jose Mourinho explains why Sergio Romero started against Anderlecht

Jose Mourinho has explained why David de Gea didn’t start against Anderlecht in the quarter-final as he believes Sergio Romero deserves continuity in the Europa League.

The Argentine has played in almost all of Man United’s Europa League games and has done a brilliant job of proving his worth at Old Trafford following a shaky start last year.

Many were unsure of his role at the club when he first arrived under Louis van Gaal, but Romero has massively improved since training alongside De Gea and has proven he has what it takes to keep a clean sheet in the Europa League and Premier League.

Speaking about Romero ahead of the clash, Mourinho claimed he deserves to continue playing.

When we first saw Romero in action it was nerve-racking, there was never a feeling of solidness when he was in between the sticks, but now he’s proven he has the ability to compete with De Gea at Old Trafford, pulling out many world-class saves in the process.

He’s worked hard and kept his head down in the side and he absolutely deserves to be played in the Europa League as he has a stunning record and merits all the minutes that come his way.
