Manchester United 2-0 Chelsea: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea 6 – Had surprisingly little to do on his return to the starting XI against a muted Chelsea attack.

Antonio Valencia 7 – Had the licence to move further forward as Herrera man-marked Eden Hazard. Provided impetus going forward and looked good on the ball.

Eric Bailly 6 – Did well when it came to neutralising the aggression of Diego Costa, making a series of important nudges and blocks. Could have been better when it came to playing out from the back.

Marcos Rojo 7 – Led from the back once again with another domineering display, just a few days after doing the same in Belgium. Exceptional dedication and discipline.

Matteo Darmian 7 – Quietly but brilliantly dealt with the threat of Pedro on the right hand side. Gave absolutely everything and moved the ball well.

Ander Herrera 8 – Supplied a wondrous assist for Rashford and grabbed a goal of his own whilst also taking Hazard completely out of the game with a superb man-marking job. A monstrous performance.

Paul Pogba 6 – Served as a potent springboard for the likes of Rashford and Lingard to exploit the space in behind Chelsea’s back three but let himself down occasionally with some sloppy pieces of play on the ball.

Marouane Fellaini 6 – Certainly fulfilled the role of Jose Mourinho’s designated midfield bully, constantly harassing both Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante, but could have offered a bit more going forward.

Ashley Young 7 – Gave absolutely everything as captain and ensured that the home side kept their shape with and without the ball. Provided the assist for Herrera’s goal through virtue of sheer dedication.

Jesse Lingard 6 – Made a series of wonderful touches as Rashford’s strike partner but could have had more conviction in the final third.

Marcus Rashford 8 – The teenager at his startling best: powerful, devastatingly fast and brimming with confidence, complimented by a wonderfully taken goal in the seventh minute.
