Zlatan Ibrahimovic set to start for Manchester United against Anderlecht

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is in line to start the Europa League quarter-final second leg tie with Anderlecht on Thursday after being left on the bench for Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Chelsea.

The big Swede was left out of the win over Antonio Conte’s men after he was described as “jaded” by Jose Mourinho in the wake of 90-minute spells against Everton, Sunderland and Anderlecht all in just over a week.

Mourinho, when asked about the possibility of Marcus Rashford – following a superb display at No.9 against Chelsea – keeping his place up front for the clash with Rene Weiler’s side, he hinted towards both players starting.

And according to ClubCall, the 35-year-old will indeed resume his status as Man United’s No.9 against Anderlecht.

There have been times this season where United, with Ibrahimovic at the masthead of attack, have struggled to generate a sense unpredictability going forward. Every ball appears to be aimed towards his vicinity, and defenders, in turn, start to suss Mourinho’s men out.

What Rashford brought on Sunday, however, was a kind of intangible, devastating fervour to the mouthpiece of United’s attack. The crowd was up; Chelsea were rattled. It felt like the United of old.

Mourinho will, therefore, need to find a way to combine Rashford’s natural menace and Zlatan’s potency in front of goal ahead of what is a crucial European tie.
