Daley Blind has stressed that he is happy to play anywhere under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.
The Dutchman, in spite of a series of powerful performances at centre-back alongside Chris Smalling last season, has featured primarily as a left back under the Portuguese’s tutelage.
He was handed a chance to impress at centre-back for the first time since October against Burnley and duly impressed as Man United claimed a relatively trouble-free 2-0 win at Turf Moor.
And Blind, speaking soon after the game, was quick to note that he would willingly play anywhere at Old Trafford.
“Yes, it was good. I think we [him and Eric Bailly] have a good understanding in spite of the language [difference] but I think it went very well and we played particularly well,” he said.
“I feel very confident about the position [centre-back] myself. It was a very good performance from the team too, I think.”
“I played there a lot of times last season and I feel confident in the position, I feel good in the position and feel comfortable,” he added. “I’m happy to play there again and of course everybody knows me, I play where the manager needs me, and I just want to play like anybody else. I’m just happy for the team that we put in a good performance here today.”
“Yes, we have a big squad. Everybody is ready and we need everyone. You can see that again today and we have to realise that as well that you have to be ready when you’re needed. That’s why we can still fight for what we want.”
Mourinho has had the luxury of being able to keep Blind – always a reliable, composed asset at the back – in reserve for games that require his poise and discipline so far this season.
Now, however, with Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones on the treatment table, the 54-year-old will need to use the Dutchman for more or less every game until mid-May – the proposed date for Smalling and Jones’ return to action. Supporters will desperately hope that Blind, alongside Bailly, can step up to what promises to be a sapping physical challenge over the next few weeks.
