Jose Mourinho gives injury update on Paul Pogba at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Paul Pogba will recover in time to face Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final next week after missing the Manchester derby.

The Frenchman, who has made 47 appearances this season, picked up a knock during last weekend’s 2-0 win over Burnley and missed the 0-0 draw at the Ethiad as a result.

Gary Neville, alongside numerous Man United fans, noted that Mourinho’s men desperately missed Pogba’s influence in the middle against Manchester City.

And the 54-year-old, when asked about Pogba’s return date, confirmed that he would miss the Swansea City clash but face Celta on Thursday.

“For Celta,” he said.

“We have Herrera and Carrick and nothing else. And Tim Fosu-Mensah, like today, an emergency to help the team, strong legs, energy, he’s another one that we will miss.

“So we are in trouble but we will fight, that’s for sure.”

United supporters will be pleased to hear that Pogba will only miss one more game before making a much-needed return to the starting XI.

Thursday’s stalemate with Man City highlighted the fluidity and control brought to the core of United’s midfield play by the 24-year-old. The likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial – undoubtedly capable of exploiting the home side’s back four – were left isolated without Pogba’s power and superb range of pass.

And Mourinho, following Marouane Fellaini‘s red card and Timothy Fosu-Mensah‘s injury, does indeed have a conundrum for Sunday’s game: perhaps Wayne Rooney or Daley Blind, with Axel Tuanzebe coming in alongside Bailly, will have to feature in the Frenchman’s absence.
