Jose Mourinho opens up about Manchester United’s top four chances

Jose Mourinho has been discussing Manchester United’s chances of reaching the top four following their 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

The draw with Pep Guardiola’s side keeps Man United just one point behind fourth spot and two points behind third-placed Liverpool, who have played a game more.

Mourinho’s men still have to contend with potentially tricky trips to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal before the end of the season.

And the 54-year-old, speaking after the game, noted that the battle for the final Champions League place will be fought between United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

“I think Man City will finish in the top four. It’s between us, Liverpool and Arsenal,” he said.

Claiming a point at the Ethiad, whilst far from ideal, does indeed keep United firmly in the race for fourth spot with five games left. A win over Swansea City on Sunday will take Mourinho’s men – for a few hours, at least – into third spot.

United can take immense confidence from the fact that a Champions League spot remains very much in their hands. They will reach Europe’s elite next season if they win their remaining games. One suspects that how Mourinho’s men perform at the Emirates and White Hart Lane – two potential stumbling blocks – will strongly dictate whether they can push Liverpool out of the top four at the final hurdle.
