Jose Mourinho: Wayne Rooney is an option in midfield against Swansea City

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Wayne Rooney could feature in midfield for Manchester United against Swansea City this weekend.

The Portuguese, with Paul Pogba injured and Marouane Fellaini suspended for three games, only has two recognised midfielders at his disposal for the clash with Paul Clement’s side.

He stated at the start of his time at Old Trafford that he didn’t think of Rooney, who only has three Premier League starts since Christmas, as a midfielder, despite Louis van Gaal using him there on several occasions last season.

But Mourinho, when asked about his scant midfield options, noted that the 31-year-old was indeed an option ahead of Sunday’s game.

“Yes, he’s an option,” he said. “We don’t have (any other players there). We have (Ander) Herrera and (Michael) Carrick and nothing else.”

The Portuguese will have to do some delicate tinkering with his squad over the next two days. He could, of course, use Rooney in a midfield three with Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, with the Englishman supposedly fulfilling the role normally occupied by Pogba, who will return in time for Thursday’s clash with Celta Vigo.

Another option would be to revert to the 4-2-3-1 system used earlier on this season and use Rooney as a No.10 – a more natural position for the Englishman in the eyes of Mourinho.

Either way, options in midfield are scant and supporters will just hope United get through the game with Swansea before Fellaini and Pogba return for the trip to Spain.
