Gary Neville picks Antonio Valencia at Manchester United’s Player of the Season

Gary Neville has picked Antonio Valencia as his ‘Player of the Season’ for Manchester United.

The Ecuadorian has been an omnipresent, bustling figure on the right hand side this season, making a total of 39 appearances in all competitions under Jose Mourinho.

He was, as a result, handed a one year extension on his existing contract; Ryan Giggs has recently insisted that Valencia is currently enjoying his best season at Old Trafford.

And Neville, speaking on the subject of Valencia, noted: “He would be my player of the season if I was casting my vote.”

If I told you back in, say, 2014 that, three years from now, Valencia would be the first name on the Man United team-sheet, you would have probably had me sectioned.

His ascension from bit-part, unreliable full-back to United’s most potent threat out wide has been nothing short of sensational.

The 31-year-old is a living example of hard work paying off in the long run; Valencia’s ability has been questioned throughout his Old Trafford career, but nobody – not at any time – could have ever questioned his unyielding commitment to the cause. Every week he would be there, ready to be called upon under any circumstances, and he is now reaping the benefits of his exemplary attitude.
