Jose Mourinho has two lists of potential targets ahead of the summer transfer window that will be utilised in accordance with whether or not Manchester United reach the Champions League, according to reports.

The 54-year-old has outlined the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Victor Lindelof and Gianluigi Donnarumma as potential targets this summer.

Some reports have suggested that many players, including Antoine Griezmann and Tiemoué Bakayoko, would only consider a move to Old Trafford if Man United qualified for the Champions League next season.

And Mourinho, as a result, has compiled two lists ahead of the transfer window: one outlining players that will come to United only if they reach the Champions League, and another containing players open to a move even if they don’t reach Europe’s elite next year.

Mourinho’s decision to bisect his transfer options in accordance with how United finish this season is an admirable sign of pragmatism and future planning.

But it is, above anything, a galling illustration of the ramifications that surface for any side unable to secure a Champions League place. The 54-year-old will know that, without the allure of Champions League football, he may struggle to secure the players needed to help reach the standards that will be demanded of him next season.
