Celta Vigo 0-1 Manchester United: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

Sergio Romero 6.5 – Made an important save from Pione Sisto in the 59th minute and gathered the ball well. Another solid display from the Argentine.

Antonio Valencia 7 – Handed the armband by Jose Mourinho and, like every game this season, delivered a dedicated, rampaging display, keeping tabs on Sisto and producing a number of promising surges forward.

Eric Bailly 7 – The Ivorian, playing his 11th game in a row and fighting an ankle injury, deserves praise alone for making himself available; superb energy and grit throughout.

Daley Blind 6.5 – Could have perhaps been tighter to onrushing forwards at set-pieces but you can tell the continental stage suits him better when it comes to featuring at centre back: wonderfully composed holding the ball and passed through the lines with confidence.

Matteo Darmian 6.5 – Never inspiring to watch but very rarely outgunned by his opposite number: another workmanlike, disciplined display at left back from the Italian.

Ander Herrera 7 – The Spaniard himself warned against Celta Vigo’s intensity ahead of the game but it was Herrera, more than anybody else, bringing the aggression in the middle. Energetic and crisp on the ball throughout.

Marouane Fellaini 6 – Provided his usual physicality and battering ram-esque style to midfield but couldn’t find teammates further up the field on a regular enough basis.

Paul Pogba 7.5 – His absence was sorely felt over the weekend and, this time around, his presence was impossible to ignore in a game that he dominated from start to finish. Simply exquisite on the ball and keen to get forward.

Jesse Lingard 5 – Worked hard on the right hand side but once again fell miserably short in front of goal: fluffed three excellent chances.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 6 – Struggled for momentum in the first half, clearly inundated by Celta’s powerful pressing, but managed to enjoy some room in the second half. Jose Mourinho will, however, expect more from the Armenian at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford 8 – Did everything that you’d want from a striker in a big game: ran hard, held up the ball intelligently, created chances and gave the visitors a crucial away goal with a sensational free kick. His talent, it seems, knows no limits.
