Manchester United fans thrilled with Paul Pogba’s performance against Celta Vigo

Manchester United supporters were decidedly thrilled with Paul Pogba’s display during their side’s first leg 1-0 win over Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final.

The Frenchman was absent from draws with Manchester City and Swansea after picking up a knock during Man United’s 2-0 win against Burnley.

He was back in the side for the trip to Spain, however, and produced a sumptuous midfield performance, effectively dictating proceedings from start to finish.

Supporters were quick to make note of the 24-year-old’s storming influence in the middle.

Celta boss Toto Berizzo places emphasis on going man-for-man all over the pitch, always looking to charge after the ball and winning it back efficiently. This has worked well for the Spanish side over the last couple of seasons; such an approach was indeed what set the platform for their 4-3 win over Barcelona earlier on in the campaign.

Against Pogba, however, it just didn’t work. Celta players simply bounced off him all evening, unable to grasp – let alone control – the Frenchman’s tantalising combination of strength and close control. There is a reason why Jesse Lingard labelled him as an octopus: he always looks as if he can win the ball and opponents, in turn, never look capable of winning it back.

This was the story of Celta’s defeat to Mourinho’s men and you sense that, while the tie is still alive for Berizzo’s men, they will not look forward to contending with the 24-year-old once again.
