Gary Neville: Ander Herrera has proven me wrong at Manchester United

Gary Neville insists Ander Herrera has proven him incredibly wrong since his arrival at Manchester United in 2014.

He’s made over 100 appearances since he left Athletic Bilbao three years ago and has kickstarted his career under Jose Mourinho this season, already playing 46 games across all competitions this term.

The Spaniard had been unable to establish himself as a first-team player in the past but he’s now one of our most important squad members and has become a real leader on and off the pitch.

Speaking about his transformation, Neville insists he was wrong to write Herrera off after his arrival at the club.

“When he first came, no way in this world did I think he was a United player,” he said.

“I thought he was too nice and didn’t look particularly brilliant. But in the last six or seven months there’s been a huge shift in his personality.

“He looks like a fighter and if there’s a job to be done, it’s him doing it.

“He’s better defensively than he gets credit for.

“He’s applied himself to local life and the fans and that is a huge plus for him.

“I’ve shifted my opinion on him – it’s credit to him and Jose Mourinho. He’s dependable, reliable and improving all the time.”

He’s been a vital member of the squad this season, and fans truly felt his presence in the fixture against Chelsea where he picked up the Man of the Match award for finding a goal, an assist and marking Eden Hazard out of the entire game.

Hopes are he can continue his impressive form moving forward as there’s no doubt that he has what it takes to be a top player.
