Manchester United fans furious with Chris Smalling’s performance against Arsenal

Manchester United fans were decidedly furious with Chris Smalling during their side’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

Smalling, making his first Premier League start since March, was thrown in alongside Phil Jones and struggled to offer any assurance at the back as Arsene Wenger’s men snatched two quick goals early in the second half.

His complete failure to track Danny Welbeck, despite that being his only job, in the lead-up to Arsenal’s goal was potent evidence behind why many supporters don’t consider him good enough to remain in Jose Mourinho’s plans over the summer.

Supporters were quick to vent their frustration towards the Englishman following an unconvincing performance.

What a difference a year can make. Just 12 months ago Smalling was an indispensable asset at the back for Man United; against Arsenal, however, he was a liability from start to finish, failing to offer any sort of composure or direction with an indeed without the ball.

It was noted by many in the lead-up to this clash that how Smalling conducted himself at the Emirates would strongly define his future under Mourinho and there was nothing in those 90 minutes to convince supporters that he deserves a place in the squad next season.
