Rio Ferdinand reacts to Marcus Rashford’s performance against Celta Vigo

Rio Ferdiand has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford for what was another powerful performance against Celta Vigo in the Europa League.

The youngster, who claimed the all important away goal in Spain last week, had a massive hand in forging Manchester United’s opener at Old Trafford, sending an inch-perfect ball into the direction of Marouane Fellaini, who headed home to give the hosts what turned out to be a game-deciding goal.

There were no goals this time around for Rashford, but this was another ebullient performance at No.9 from the 19-year-old.

And Ferdinand, speaking on BT Sport, was quick to dish out praise for the Englishman.

“It’s a tremendous ball,” he said.

“Rashford has looked like the person who is going to unlock the door and this is a great ball. Normally you think you’d see him on the end of this but he puts the ball in.

“That’s where I prefer to see Fellaini, in the opposition’s box, causing havoc.

“He’s pointing there, ‘put the ball in the danger area and I’ll finish it’. The quality of the ball, the pace of the ball and then the execution.”

The first leg held witness to Rashford’s ability to produce jaw-dropping, game-changing moments on the biggest of stages. Celta would have prepped extensively over the past week to quash the mazy threat he can offer.

But there was little they could to as Rashford, with 17 minutes gone, treated the watching world to a more subtle – but equally devastating – aspect of his game. That ball to Fellaini was perfect – impossible to stop, even. The way it swerved, dipped and dragged away keeper Sergio Alvarez into a realm of uncertainty before Fellaini crashed home was breathtaking.

He has been the deciding force over the two legs, once again displaying his appetite for the big stage. Can he do the same again in Stockholm?
