Rio Ferdinand: Eric Bailly will be devastated with his red card against Celta Vigo

by Leo Nieboer

Rio Ferdinand has noted that Eric Bailly will be devastated in the wake of receiving a red card during Manchester United’s second leg 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo in the Europa League semi-final.

The Ivorian, with tensions running high following a late Celta equaliser, pushed John Guidetti to the floor during a heated exchange between the two sets of players and duly received his marching orders.

He will now miss the final in Stockholm – a blow that will, as Jose Mourinho admitted in the aftermath, significantly weaken Man United’s back four.

And Ferdinand, speaking on BT Sport, reflected on how Bailly, sitting in the dressing room, would have felt.

“Bailly will be devastated,” he said. “He will be sitting in the changing room thinking, ‘What have I done?’. He’s been the best defender this year.

“He’s been consistent and has been out there more than anyone else. He doesn’t pick up many injuries and he’s going to be a big miss.”

It remains unclear exactly what Guidetti said to Bailly to provoke such an angered response out of nowhere, but anybody who has seen the incident will tell you that the former Manchester City man produced a dramatically exaggerated reaction. The Swede then went on to miss an open goal in the dying stages. How’s that for karma, John?

On a more serious note, Bailly will be kicking himself over a needless incident that precludes him from featuring in Stockholm. Tensions run high on the pitch, and these things do happen, but the 23-year-old’s absence significantly jeopardises their chances of stopping Ajax – and Kasper Dolberg in particular – from getting in behind their back four on May 24.
