Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Daley Blind will not feature against Southampton on Wednesday night after the Dutchman completed 90 minutes against Tottenham Hostpur.
Blind was just one of three players that kept their place in the starting XI at White Hart Lane following Thursday’s draw with Celta Vigo.
The 27-year-old, featuring at left-back, endured a difficult game against an aggressive Spurs side but did well to stop Kieran Trippier from reaching the byline or providing too many crosses.
And Mourinho, speaking after the game, confirmed that Blind would receive a rest against the Saints.
“The most important thing for us is no injuries,” he said. “And some people having a proper rest.
“Blind had to play 90 minutes but the next match is for Blind to rest and we have to go like this step-by-step, rest people.”
Preparing a knackered, injury hit squad for a European final whilst simultaneously negotiating three Premier League games is by no means a simple task.
Mourinho, as seen through his management of Blind here, is resting players in a way that sees every member of the starting XI in Stockholm receive the same amount of game time – not too much, but just enough to remain on the threshold. Concerns will continue to loom over United’s form, however, in preparation for the clash with Ajax – they now have just one point from a possible nine.
