Josh Harrop scores wonderful hat-trick as Man United U23s beat Spurs 3-2

Josh Harrop may have played himself into contention to make his Manchester United debut after a wonderful individual performance for the U23s in a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Harrop, 21, scored two goals in 12 minutes towards the end of the game to seal a comeback over Spurs which ended the U23s season on a high after a very poor campaign overall where relegation threatened at one stage.

With Man United playing Crystal Palace just three days before our Europa League final, Jose Mourinho will rotate his squad heavily and after that performance from Harrop he could well follow the likes of Axel Tuanzebe, Scott McTominay and Demetri Mitchell in making his debut this season.

Last year was one of real frustration for Harrop. He was sidelined with groin and hernia problems which kept him out for the majority of the campaign and he only managed 14 appearances for the U21s. This season, he’s overcome that and made 25 appearances in which he’s scored ten goals and has five assists – an excellent return for any central midfielder.

I’d love to see Harrop get the nod from Mourinho. I remember when he broke into the U23s alongside Joe Rothwell and was so impressive that he took his place in the starting XI. Of course, that was prior to his injury woes but he looks to have overcome them.

A place in the squad against Crystal Palace will be a reward for a season of progress for Harrop and seeing as Mourinho doesn’t care whether we win or lose the game, he could do worse than making it a season to remember for Harrop for the right reasons.
