Southampton vs Manchester United: Potential XI with Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay

by Leo Nieboer

Jose Mourinho confirmed in the wake of Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur that he had decided upon a starting XI for the Europa League final clash with Ajax on May 24.

Wednesday’s visit to Southampton, which promises to be far less turbulent than the White Hart Lane cauldron, serves as the perfect time, you suspect, for Mourinho to test out his favoured starting XI just a week before the game in Stockholm.

Mourinho will, on the other hand, have to rest certain players that featured against Spurs: Daley Blind, for example, will be sidelined at Saint Mary’s.

With that in mind, here is a potential XI for the clash with Southampton featuring Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay.

Mourinho will want to field a relatively strong XI, but the probable absence of Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata, who all played the full 90 minutes at White Hart Lane, could pave the way for McTominay – who came on against Arsenal earlier this month and looked busy on the left hand side – to make his first ever senior start.

Marcus Rashford uncharacteristically spurned an excellent chance to put Man United level against Spurs after coming on during the closing stages and will, no doubt, be hungry to set the record straight against Claude Puel’s side in preparation for his first ever European final.
