Jose Mourinho is waiting on the results of scans on Marouane Fellaini‘s injury before deciding whether he is fit for the Europa League final.
Fellaini went off with a suspected leg injury in the 0-0 draw with Southampton this week and will not play against Crystal Palace this weekend because of it but Mourinho will want him fit for the Ajax game. However, he’ll have to wait to find out what the scan results are.
As well as Fellaini, Chris Smalling will miss Crystal Palace but Mourinho expects him to be fit for Ajax.
“Smalling has a problem but a small problem that I think no problem at all for next week,” Mourinho said.
“Problem for the weekend but not for the final and Marouane is the question mark, is the question mark we wait for today’s scans.
“We decide not to do yesterday, again his feelings are not bad, but let’s wait.
“And Timo Fosu-Mensah plays Sunday and if the reaction is good and if he manages to play the game without problems he’s a new option for us for the final.”
Like him or loathe him, Fellaini could be a real asset up against a small and youthful Ajax team who have struggled to deal with height and power this season. So long as he doesn’t start in central midfield, I think Fellaini could genuinely help us in the final.
As for Smalling, I’d much rather see Phil Jones start alongside Daley Blind in defence but Mourinho will want as many options available as possible so he’ll certainly be hoping Smalling is fit to travel. Timothy Fosu-Mensah gives him another option which is a boost.
United have had a swathe of injury problems in the last couple of months and with just one game left the main focus for Crystal Palace on Sunday is to avoid any more injuries. If we can come through that without any more problems, the squad will be in as good a shape as possible for Stockholm.
