Micheal Carrick: Paul Pogba is not bothered by criticism at Man United

by Leo Nieboer

Michael Carrick has noted that Paul Pogba is not bothered by the criticism he receives from pundits and rival supporters, labelling the Frenchman as a “top player”.

The 24-year-old returned to Old Trafford over the summer for a world record fee of £89m and has been subject to scrutiny from all corners of the footballing world ever since.

Pogba’s display against Crystal Palace, however, his first since the passing of his father, illustrated exactly why Man United supporters don’t share the same reservations when it comes to what the Frenchman can offer in midfield.

And Carrick, speaking after the 2-0 win over Palace, noted that his teammate doesn’t take much interest in what people say about his performances.

It is somewhat telling that, while the wider world spews about Pogba not doing, well, what players worth £89m are supposed to (like anybody actually knows what that is), United supporters have immediately warmed to the midfielder.

Mundane displays against Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton highlighted in brutal fashion just how crucial Pogba is to United’s fluidity going forward, to their very heartbeat as a collective. And the question Mourinho will be pondering over the summer is not how he can improve the Frenchman, but indeed how he can find the players capable of reaching the 24-year-old’s level next season.
