The Englishman was up against Phil Jones for a place in the team alongside Daley Blind for Wednesday’s Europa League final against Ajax in Stockholm as Eric Bailly had been ruled out after his red card.
With Jones set to be handed another chance to save his career at Old Trafford, there’s a slim chance of Smalling featuring in the side’s most important fixture of the season.
He was forced to miss Sunday’s Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford with a toe injury and it’s clear he’s fallen further down the pecking order following his disappointing results.
Blind was initially considered as a left-back by Mourinho while Luke Shaw was ruled out but he’ll remain at centre-half against former club Ajax as he’s impressed the Portuguese boss since taking Rojo’s place after his cruciate knee ligament injury last month.
Smalling has been publically criticised twice by Mourinho this season but he’s still gone on to make 35 appearances in all competitions for United this season, helping them fight for silverware on different fronts.
It seems his career at Old Trafford could be coming to an end and fans won’t be surprised as they’ve been calling for it all season.
