Jose Mourinho has listed Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier, AS Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic as potential midfield options over the transfer window, according to reports.
Paris Saint Germain’s Marco Verratti, who recently admitted he’d consider a move away from the Parc des Princes this summer, is also on the 54-year-old’s radar.
And according to ESPN sources, Mourinho has pin-pointed Dier, Bakayoko and Matic as his three main options over the transfer window and will sign one of them.
The aforementioned trio share a distinctive number of features: physically imposing, generally defensively minded but very much competent when it comes to moving the ball forward, and fresh from very good seasons with their respective clubs.
Bakayoko sticks out for his outright athleticism and aptitude for marauding forward; Dier and Matic are more selective with their ventures up the pitch and, in keeping with Premier League fashion, often pick reliability and firmness over spontaneity.
Either way, Mourinho has clearly placed emphasis on securing midfielders he can count on immediately – players currently at the top of their game and capable, in this case, of charing the load of games with Carrick next season.
