Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas discusses Alexandre Lacazette’s potential summer transfer

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas has opened up about Alexandre Lacazette’s summer transfer, addressing his failed move to Atletico Madrid.

He claims Lacazette had been given the green light to make the move this summer but was let down after Atletico failed an appeal on their current transfer ban until January 2018.

Manchester United were heavily linked with a move for Antione Griezmann as a move was said to be all but confirmed, however, the Frenchman has committed his future at the Spanish club as he understands Deigo Simeone would not be able to replace him.

Speaking about his situation, Aulas claims progress has been made on possible solutions for the Lacazette position

“It’s good and bad news. It was, in financial terms, a very significant operation. Of course that has changed everything. We had given Alex the green light to go to Atletico, the club of his heart,” he said.

“I’ve not had his agent on the phone, nor him, as I’ve been in Cardiff, but I had said to Alexandre not to get too far ahead of himself, as there can always be disappointments in football.

“It brings into question the commitments made on both sides. We had made progress on possible solutions. We might have one extra striker next season.”

It’s a shame because Griezmann would have been incredible to watch at Old Trafford, but Lacazette has proven that he’s a prolific striker and would have picked up attention as United shifted their priorities this summer with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s future uncertain.
