Bryan Robson: Jose Mourinho must sign Alexis Sanchez at Manchester United

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson has encouraged Jose Mourinho to sign Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez over the transfer window.

It was reported earlier on in the season that Mourinho had personally called the Chilean winger over a potential move to Old Trafford.

Sanchez, in spite of what was a disappointing season for the Gunners, claimed 31 goals and recorded 13 assists in all competitions.

And Robson, when asked about who he would like to see come to Old Trafford over the summer, immediately pointed towards the ebullient 28-year-old.

“His character is right, he is a tough player, really skilful, he works really hard and works hard. He can score goals and create goals,’ said Robson.

“When you put all that package into one, he’s exactly the type that we would like here.

“Remember he has played at a club like Arsenal, where you’ve got to be able to handle pressure. I think he’s 100 per cent guaranteed.”

Perhaps only at Arsenal could somebody claim 31 goals in a season and still leave supporters dissatisfied. Sanchez has a menacing force this season, often taking matters into his own hands when those around him fail to stand out. And yet, this has been the very problem with Sanchez at Arsenal this season: individually brilliant, yes, but unable to settle into the pattern of Arsene Wenger’s build-up play, and with the Frenchman set to remain for another two years – *fist pumps* – we can expect a similar pattern to emerge if he does choose to stay.

At United, however, that ruthlessness going forward falls in line with exactly what Mourinho wants at Old Trafford: players capable of grabbing the game by the scruff of its neck and, most importantly, not shrinking in front of goal.

The choice for Sanchez, then, seems clear: more frustration under Wenger, or a new challenge under Mourinho (with Champions League football).
