Manchester United have entered the race for Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins, according to reports from Portugal.
The Portuguese, just like Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Nani, broke through the ranks at Sporting and made his debut aged 19.
He has been a regular in the side ever since, making 87 appearances and claiming 14 goals in two seasons, featuring as a winger on both flanks.
And according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Jose Mourinho will rival Liverpool in the pursuit of Martins’ signature this summer.
The 22-year-old can also feature as a full-back, which tells you plenty about what kind of player he could be for Mourinho, who has clearly placed emphasis on securing a winger capable of offering something different to his current crop of wide players.
Like Ivan Perisic, who could be on the verge of a move to Old Trafford, Martins offers a more traditional dynamic out wide – traditional in the sense that, as his capacity for playing at full-back shows, he is an indefatigable worker, blessed with a steely set of lungs.
His style, in fact, has largely disappeared in the Premier League, and perhaps Mourinho – whose wingers largely underperformed last season – would benefit from having somebody who looks most comfortable closer to the touchline and with green grass ahead of him.
