Former Arsenal winger Paul Merson has urged Jose Mourinho to splash out for last season’s top goalscorer Harry Kane this summer.
It was reported earlier in the season that Jose Mourinho had identified the Tottenham Hotspur forward as a potential back-up option for Antoine Griezmann.
The 23-year-old has now claimed the Premier League Golden Boot for successive seasons after bettering his 2015/16 campaign’s total of 25 goals with hat-tricks against Leicester City and Hull that took his total up to 29.
And Merson, speaking on Sky Sports, questioned why Mourinho hasn’t expressed more serious interest in Kane this summer.
“I honestly thought Man Utd would have gone for Harry Kane,” he said.
“I thought they would have gone £90m or £100m for him. I don’t think Man Utd can afford to have a Pogba situation next season where they pay big money for someone and it’s going to take them a season to get into it.”
Perhaps Merson just wants Mourinho to sign players with names he can pronounce to save him more embarrassment on Soccer Saturday next season. I mean, have you see him try to say Cesar Azpilicueta? He must have been livid when Henrikh Mkhitaryan joined last summer.
More seriously, the prospect of Kane moving anywhere over the summer – even if United did make an astronomical bid – feels unlikely. He has cemented himself as Spurs’ talisman up front and, under the watch of Mauricio Pochettino, will only improve while Mourinho sets his sights on Alvaro Morata and Andrea Belotti instead.
