Manchester United have been dealt a blow in the race to sign Torino striker Andrea Belotti, as club president Urbano Cairo, claims he won’t accept an offer less than €100m.
He has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer as Jose Mourinho is looking for a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has recently been released by the club.
Belotti has enjoyed an impressive season in the Serie A and while Urbano Cairo has confirmed he would like his star asset to stay at the club, he won’t have an option if United trigger his release clause.
Speaking about a potential move, Cairo believes he has a good chance of persuading Belotti to stay put.
“I care about Belotti and I’m keeping hold of him,” he said.
“He has a contract with Torino until 2021. I would only sell him for €100m, but even then he can refuse.
“The most important thing is what he wants, regardless of the release clause, and I believe he wants to stay.
“We are trying to build the best possible team at Torino.
“Belotti is busy on international duty [with Italy] at the moment and then he is getting married on Thursday – he invited me.”
It’s a lot to play for one player and it’s clear Cairo want him to stay as they aren’t willing to negotiate a lower fee, but with a move for Alvaro Morata moving quickly, it seems United already have an alternative lined up.
