Jose Mourinho has ruled out the prospect of signing AS Monaco’s Fabinho this summer and will instead divert his attention towards Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, according to reports.
The 23-year-old was on Mourinho’s radar ahead of the 2016/17 campaign but elected to continue working under Leonardo Jardim amid uncertainty of a starting place at Old Trafford.
Various reports have claimed that a €45m fee for Fabinho had been agreed following an impressive campaign that saw him make 50 appearances on route to the Ligue 1 title.
However, according to M.E.N‘s James Robson, the 54-year-old will not pursue a deal for Fabinho this summer.
The report further states that Tiemoué Bakayoko’s potential move to Chelsea could push Matic, signed by Mourinho during his time at Chelsea, to the fringes at Stamford Bridge and, in turn, render a move to Man United possible if the Portuguese tables an offer of around £40m.
You sense that Mourinho, in pursuit of a Michael Carrick replacement, wants somebody he can trust at the base of midfield, and the fact that Fabinho begun life at Monaco featuring as a right back, combined with the proven success of Matic in the Premier League, has understandably altered Mourinho’s scope of interest this summer.
