Aitor Karanka: Alvaro Morata will be spectacular at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s former assistant at Real Madrid Aitor Karanka has insisted that Alvaro Morata will be a special player for Manchester United.

The 24-year-old, who wants more game time elsewhere following another season on the periphery under Zinedine Zidane, is on the verge of completing a move to Man United.

Details of the move have been largely agreed upon, with the only obstacle being Madrid’s demand for a sum of £78m before parting ways with the Spaniard.

And Karanka, who oversaw Morata’s progression into the Madrid first team back in 2010, told Cadena Ser that United supporters ought to be optimistic over the deal.

“Alvaro fits anywhere,” he said.

“We knew since he was with us at the age of 19 (his talent) and I know him since he was 17 because he came to the Under 17 World Cup in Nigeria.

“Alvaro is the classic player that can fit anywhere. He has everything.

“The year he spent at Juventus was good for him to mature. For this (Premier League) football he is a spectacular player.”

Karanka, sacked by Middlesbrough last season, knows more about Morata’s playing style than most people, and after a season (well, not quite) in the Premier League you can tell that the attributes he saw the striker hone at Madrid will serve him well at Old Trafford.

Then again, you don’t necessarily need a deep rooted knowledge of Morata’s qualities to know that he can succeed under Mourinho: a better goals to minute ratio from last season than the regularly serenaded Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane and, at the age of 24, a league winners medal in both Spain and Italy.

He is the real deal, and there is still much more to come.
