Rio Ferdinand reacts to prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid

Rio Ferdinand has expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of former teammates Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid this summer.

Sources at Sky Sports claimed on Friday that the Ballon D’Or holder, recently subject to tax fraud allegations, no longer wanted to play in La Liga.

Man United fans understandably reacted joyously to the news of the Ronaldo’s potential departure and will, if only quixotically, be dreaming up what Mourinho’s side could look like with the 32-year-old at the heart of proceedings.

And Ferdinand, also a United fan at heart, has likewise fanned the flames surrounding a potential move back to Old Trafford.

It is worth pointing out that Madrid, back in 2015, valued Ronaldo’s release clause at €1bn – that’s more than the entire GDP of Gambia.

That is, of course, a statement above anything, as opposed to financial Real Politik – but it nevertheless sheds light on the extraterrestrial figure that will have to be paid by whoever signs him. There can only be a handful of clubs, of which United are one, that can afford to shell out what will be, I imagine, a figure of around £250m for the Portuguese winger.

The question is, I guess, whether or not supporters would be open to their club abandoning any other transfer target for the sole purpose of bringing Ronny back home?
